about
This song is a bit of tough love. It's about someone who could but doesn't try - because of assumptions it's too hard, hangups about not being good enough, a fear of failure, or (occasionally, let's be honest) just sheer laziness. It's for unfulfilled purpose and wasted talent, for anyone who underestimates their worth, who has felt silly or ashamed for dreaming big and put those dreams away in a box. But also some encouragement: it's not over. We're not done.
As usual I had a mix of people and scenarios in mind when I wrote it, but if I'm being perfectly honest the main person who needed it was me. And it took a while, but recording it and putting it out into the world is my reply.
I hope you like it. And if some of the above applies to you, know that you're not done yet either.

LYRICS
I find it so frustrating
that you can barely be bothered to live your life
occasionally wondering why
you've fallen so far behind
still living in a hole don't even want to try to climb out
I want to give you a hand but I think that you'd rather pull me down
and I wish you'd stop pretending
to be satisfied with this
believing the lies you've spun into
a fantasy where nothing good is true
and all of it fooling nobody but you
| you sell yourself short
| too afraid to back yourself
| ashamed of even wanting more
| you think this is all that you deserve oh please
| give yourself some credit
always ready to talk
but you never want to listen, you don't listen to me now
and it's a measure of how much I think of you
that I keep persisting, insisting you see how
so jaded by your broken ambitions that
you think it's beyond repair
but I don't buy it for a minute
no I don't believe you're finished yet
...
nobody's forcing you to reach for the sky
if a dream is good don't let it die
it's not over, you're not done
you can live a life that is big and bold
and keep on living it even as you grow old
it's not over, you're not done
...
so don't sell yourself short
it's ok to back yourself
don't be afraid of wanting more
cause this isn't all that you deserve so please
give yourself some credit
